Melé is Mixpak’s newest artist and his first Mixpak release is out now on vinyl! This 12″ includes two originals, “Bombay” and “Flexi,” and two huge remixes of “Bombay” from French Fries and Nadastrom.
But who exactly are these two strange musicians? Real people, or a manifestation of the internet becoming aware of its own existence and using that consciousness to start making dance music?
These two mystical overseers of the web took a moment to shoot the breeze about influences, forthcoming work, (never) forgetting about Dr. Dre, and also provided us with a fantastic mix of exclusive club music – much of which I can absolutely guarantee that you have never heard in your life.
Interview by Brendan Arnott (my text in bold)
For those on the internet who don’t know – who are LOL Boys and how did they start making music together?
We met through a music message board. We were both into each other’s music and thought “Why not try something together for this remix competition?” We liked how it came out, so we continued to work together. So, basically, the whole concept behind LOL Boys was like, to exist on the internet… to make music over the internet sending parts back and forth, try something different. It’s an ongoing collaboration. We’ve made beats where we’re in the same room but normally we’re about two thousand miles apart.
We just received this missive from friend of the label and legendary disciple of the road, the one and only Juiceboxxx.
Juiceboxxx here. Just got back from a 2 1/2 month tour of North America supporting my mixtape THUNDER ZONE VOLUME ONE. Check out this insane video of me raging at Festival NRML in Monterrary, Mexcio! I think I totally lost my mind on this one, but I’m chillin’ in the heartland for a bit, so that feels really positive.
I am gearing up for a run of shows in Canada with the legendary PUBLIC ENEMY plus another installment of the mixtape. Much respect to Mixpak for keeping things moving forward!
Grab the Thunder Zone Volume One mixtape at juiceboxxx.com and keep checking his myspace for his upcoming dates with Public Enemy. Also, pro tip, get involved.
Melé’s Bombay EP for Mixpak is just about ready to drop and the anticipation is getting white hot with strong early support from Oliver Twizt, Buraka Som Sistema, Catchdubs and more. Sinden recently tapped Melé for a guest mix on his Kiss FM show and the resulting mix does not disappoint. Download it here or stream it below.
Tokyo’s Roger Yamaha is owner of Moonwalk Records and the man behind Turntable Lab Tokyo. He’s a damn good DJ and a perfect gentleman and he has just finished a new mix which he describes as “guaranteed one take, no edits, no bullshit.” Stream it or download it below. And to anyone looking for the now sold out Sizzla Mixpak shirt, Moonwalk Records has the only one’s left in the world.
The hip-hop community is in mourning over the untimely death of their beloved hip-hop icon Keith “Guru” Elam of Gang Starr. The 48-year-old rapper passed away on Monday (April 19) after a one-year battle with cancer. According to his brother, Harry Elam Jr., doctors diagnosed Guru with multiple myeloma last summer and in February, he was hospitalized with respiratory problems. Soon afterward, Guru had a heart attack and fell into a coma, from which he did not recover.
“The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support,” said Guru’s sister, Patricia Elam, via a statement. “Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence. GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.”
Guru’s longtime friend and Gang Starr co-hort DJ Premier also released statement remembering his departed comrade.
“I will celebrate Guru’s life, I will honor his memory [and] I will grieve with the Elam Family over his untimely death. I’m gonna miss hearing his signature monotone voice when we walks in the room, but the songs will always bring it back to me. His rhyme flows were insane, and I will never remove him from my heart and soul. Rest in peace to the man who felt “Satisfaction from the street crowd reaction.” I love you [GUU].”

The Mixpak Records Family would like to send their condolences to Guru’s family.
In honor of Guru, we are going to celebrate his life through music.
Before we go down memory lane, here is a song you should listen to first. It’s called “The Planet” (from 1994′s Hard to Earn LP), and it sums up how Guru — a then-aspiring rapper from Boston — decided to move to New York and achieve his dreams of becoming a rapper. In the end, he would become one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists.
Here’s Gang Starr first single, “Manifest,” from their 1989 debut album No More Mr. Nice Guy.
