Brian Wilson’s Lost Rap Single

May 27th, 2010

In the late 80s, Brian Wilson recorded the rap song “Smart Girls” with his therapist Eugene Landy taking co-writing credit.

“Smart Girls” was produced by Matt Dike, the co-founder of Delicious Vinyl who was also part of the production team behind hits by Tone Loc and Young MC. By varying accounts Dike was at one time a member of the Dust Brothers and responsible for a some of the production on The Beastie Boy’s “Paul’s Boutique” which was recorded in 1989 (roughly the same time as Wilson’s album). You can actually hear some vague links as “Smart Girls” employs a similar cut-and-paste sample aesthetic (to far worse effect) as bits of past Beach Boy hits are chopped up and sprinkled throughout the song.

For more details on how this song came about, we highly recommend Wilson’s autobiography Wouldn’t It Be Nice which details much of his career and includes an overview of the controversial relationship he had with his therapist. Hint: your therapist should not be co-writing your albums and collecting ASCAP checks. Big up all the smart girls!

Freeki Mutha (Moodymann Bootleg)

May 26th, 2010

New Zealand’s production/Dj brotherhood, Chaos In The CBD (Ben & Louis) , have recently finished this afro-funk bootleg with fellow islander, Tom Lawson, for Detroit’s tech/house innovator, Moodymann. The deeply rooted boot features the chilling, soul-filled vox, combined with the overall “underground, smoke filled jazz club” vibe. By taking all of this, and adding their signature techy touch, the boys create a perfect, well-balanced boot, fit for any filler.

Inspiration of the Day

May 26th, 2010

My jaw is on the floor here, this is maybe the most fantastic video I’ve seen all year. Whitney Houston as covered by this Philippine Zombie Lady is seriously awe-inducing. When the chorus drops at 3:28, try to tell me that you don’t have goosebumps.

Kano Teams Up With Wiley, Aidonia And Boys Noize

May 25th, 2010

London-based rapper Kano is releasing his fourth album Method To The Maadness at the 30th of August this year. His previous albums have included phenomenal guest appearances by the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Damon Albarn and Vybz Kartel, and his forthcoming album will continue this lovely tradition. Premiered on BBC1 last Friday, Get Wild is the first treat off his new album. Quite an overwhelming choice of teammates: the track features the top dog of grime Wiley, the dance hall czar Aidonia and is produced by techno kingfish Boys Noize (who recently produced Kelis’ 22nd Century and is currently working on a remix for N.E.R.D.). This clash of four great minds turned into quite something – the lyrics are fire, the production is lotsa fun and the outcome is blazing! Click here to purchase the track.

New Gucci Mane Collaborations

May 24th, 2010

Gucci Mane is set to release the second part of his trilogy The State Vs. Radric Davis, ”The Appeal”, at the end of the Summer and is planning a worldwide tour to promote his upcoming album. A fresh start with a new record label, a new management and some new collaborations. Last week two of these collaborations hit the internet: a track by Sean Garret feat. Tyga and Gucci called “She Geeked”, which is officially the first track he did after his release from county jail. He sounds different, but it’s a dope track nevertheless and Tyga’s participation in this track is quite remarkable too. This track will appear on Sean Garret’s upcoming mixtape Inkwell. The second track on which Gucci appeared is a French Montana track produced by J. Cardim called “Straight Cash”. Big Gucci Mane La Flare, I’m glad to have you back! BURRR!
