MIXPAK FM: DJ Nehpets

September 30th, 2010

Mixpak FM is back with Chicago’s legendary DJ Nehpets who describes this as a “history mix” and without a doubt it’s an amazing journey back through classic disco, house, funk and more. While you might know Nehpets from his Juke tracks (see here and here), you might not know that his first vinyl release dropped on Dance Mania when he was just 15 years old. Insider’s tip: on that release he was billed as “the backwards named Dee Jay Nehpets,” now try reading Nehpets backwards…okay, so we’re all up to speed? Back to the mix, there’s no tracklist at the moment, but anyone who wants to go for it in the comments will be praised and thanked. Take a 58 minute trip back…

You can go subscribe to Mixpak FM via iTunes, subscribe with an RSS reader from the Mixpak FM site or download this mix directly.

Q&A with David Kennedy

September 30th, 2010

David Kennedy (better known to you as dubstepper Ramadanman and one half of Hessle Audio) is about to launch his latest project, a vinyl-only club night starting in Leeds next month, aptly titled Acetate. We hooked up to ask him about his rhyme and reason, dodgy decks and digging out old Kerri Chandler.

Mixpak: It’s an age-old and sometimes unfounded complaint that using computers and/or CDJs is cheating, is your reasoning behind starting Acetate driven by this or is it driven by sound quality?

David: I use Serato when Djing, and yes, it does tell you the BPM of tunes you’re playing as do CDJs. But to be honest, I don’t think beat matching is the hardest part of Djing. Yes you could burn all your CDs at the same tempo, but then again, you could do exactly the same with dubplates. For me, starting Acetate isn’t to do with ‘real’ mixing or anything like that, it’s primarily a sound quality thing. Having said that, there is something quite satisfying about a simple, raw setup of just 2 turntables and a mixer.

Does a vinyl only night cut the wheat from the chaff for you – reinstating the DJ as a serious collector, not just as a downloader? Do you think there are a lot of DJs now who don’t own any vinyl at all, and why do you think that matters, if it does?

That’s an interesting question. I really enjoy the physicality of vinyl. Physically it has a presence in your room – I have vinyl in a mess all over my floor and I love that. As convenient and good as MP3s are, they will never have that aspect to them. I don’t think being a DJ means having loads of vinyl or whatever – I have friends who love music, but for various reasons, say financial or space wise, don’t buy vinyl, but that doesn’t mean they are any less interested in music. Each vinyl that I have, I remember where I bought it, I remember why I bought it. Maybe i’m romantiscising a bit but I love that aspect to it. It’s like a piece of vinyl travels with you, from gig to gig, or from house to flat. Playing vinyl doesn’t make you a better DJ or anything like that, the tunes you play have to come first clearly.

Elephant & Castle – Analogue EP

September 30th, 2010

Elephant & Castle is the alter-ego of producer David Reeps (who confusingly hails from Oakland, California), who has just released his debut, The Analogue EP. Sampling-wise, it’s pretty much like anything else I’ve heard in the last few years; his style owes as much to producers like Daedelus and Four Tet as it does to Phil Spector. Needless to say, it’s immense.

You can download the EP for free from E&C’s bandcamp page.

September 29th, 2010

The 4th of October sees the release of Magnetic Man’s (aka Skream, Benga and Artwork) debut album and a few previews have been released to our eager ears. This track ‘Fire’ with Ms Dynamite is exactly what it says it is, pure fire, and has got us writing to YouTube to request they install a Rewind button right now. Check their ‘YouTube Takeover’ video here, where they talk about the release and things like ‘upside down bass’ and their love of Zapp and Roger. Magnetic Man a go burn dem!

New Chris Cunningham Video

September 28th, 2010

Chris Cunningham has teamed up with Gil Scott Heron for his first video in four years, accompanying the track ‘New York is Killing Me’. It’s no ‘Come To Daddy’, but it sure is creepy. It just opened at the MoMA so if New York isn’t killing you, you can head there or watch it here.

Cory Blaine “Hot Plate” Out Now!

September 28th, 2010

We’re excited to announce “Hot Plate” the debut release from Cory Blaine, a 22 year old producer and DJ from McAllen, Texas. As a resident alongside both the Culnsweet and Bighaus crews, he has played a strong role in redefining the house music scene in Southern Texas and Northern Mexico and we’re excited to introduce him to a larger audience. With “Hot Plate” and B-side “Car Jack,” he has crafted a house sound that is equally indebted to Cajual Records, DJ Sneak and Baltimore Club. The remix package includes strong efforts from DJ Nehpets, Zombie Disco Squad, Malente&Dex and newcomer Andy Petr. House!

Available now from iTunes, Beatport, TTL Digital and Juno. Vinyl dropping later this week. Vinyl out now!

Hard Nips

September 27th, 2010

It’s taken over a year to get the recording and paperwork straight, but we can finally announce that we’ve signed our first band! Who is it? Hard Nips, “a hard-rocking and hard-partying quartet of Japanese girls,” and you can expect a four song EP in November. All the Nips currently reside in Brooklyn and NY Press recently caught up with them to find out their story.

Check out this footage of them performing last Cinco De Mayo at the Knitting Factory.

They return to the Knitting Factory September 28th (tomorrow night), opening for Japanese Alt rockers Shonen Knife. Details and tickets here.
