Sunday Jam: Talib Kweli & Consequence

October 31st, 2010

Nothin’ like a Marvin sample for a Sunday Jam. Calling it a 1st time is pushing it though…
This joint off the upcoming Year of The Blacksmith Community mixtape.

Return Of The Rivz

October 31st, 2010

A lot of the recent vocal Grime CDs have been full of a Grime/Pop hybrid that doesn’t really do anything for me, they are too diluted for Grime and not commercial enough for Pop. Thankfully there are a new batch of MCs who are keeping things 100% Grime. Merky Ace, Kozzie, Rival, Marger and Scrufizzer are the MCs that stand out from the rest of the newcomers and RivalReturn of the Rivz is the first CD out to buy from any of them.

The download is available to purchase from his Bandcamp page and the ‘Murder Edition’ CD will be in the shops on November 15 with an additional 10 tracks.

Check out the free downloads he gave away in the build up to the release date for a flavour of what to expect:
Dirty Date Freestyle
Jus Rival 1 (over Wiley – Morgue)
Jus Rival 2 (over Alias – Warriors)
Funky House
Range

And see what you think of the other MCs I mentioned on this sick freestyle video featuring Rival, Marger & Kozzie. Recorded before a recent No Hats No Hoods night in London, all tunes are by Darq E Freaker.

Tomb Crew – Dungeon Town

October 30th, 2010

I always hated visiting the London Dungeons when I was a kid. The place was packed with poor actors, screaming babies and the frights had to be PG friendly. It just bored me. Imagine how much better it would be if it was soundtracked by Tomb Crew’s ‘Dungeon Town’? The latest single from the Dubstep/Bmore/Funky London DJ/producers is out now.

p.s That’s Illaman doing the delightful bass duck dance.

Candy Shop Hits The Street

October 29th, 2010

After what seems like an eternity of waiting, DJ Pantha’s nasty UK Funky and Bassline hybrid is being released to merk the street this coming Monday. Pantha’s been tearing down the raves with ‘Candy Shops’ warping steel drums, nagging little bass pulses and scattershot toasting, so props to 1xtra’s DJ Q for signing up this banger and getting it off dubplate and into circulation. This is just another in a growing line of ultra tight production flooding out from the UK Midlands—London take note when Pantha spells it out “When you was sleeping… I said I was creeping…”

Warrior One on Soccer AM!

October 28th, 2010

So not only is Warrior One’s ‘Lord of Bashy’ perfect for the dancefloor, turns out it’s also perfect as the soundtrack to silky soccer skills. Who knew Soccer AM (only the stalwart of UK football television) had such good taste in music? EAT MY GOAL!!

Pen And Pixel

Lil Scrappy Look At Me Cover Art

Last week we mentioned that Pen and Pixel did the artwork for the new Lil Scrappy single and even if that name didn’t ring a bell, it’s likely you’re already a fan of their work. Plainly speaking, Pen and Pixel is a Houston based graphic design firm that is responsible for some of the craziest, best record covers of all time. In the late 90s, they were designing covers an incredible number of Southern rappers and labels, including Master P, Lil Wayne, No Limit Records and Cash Money Records. It’s not really a stretch to say they provided the visual aesthetic for bling-era Southern rap and that their influence is still very visible in the mixtape cover and rap record cover game today. A Mixpak all time favorite has to be this Big Bear Doin Thangs cover.
