Jubilee’s New Show on Brooklyn Radio

March 30th, 2011

Jubilee has started a fresh new show on Brooklyn Radio, Fireworks:

Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart curates a fun mix that connects the dots between house, electro, UK funky, grime, Baltimore club, dubstep,hip-hop, kuduro, cumbia, and more, drawing a thread between NYC, Miami, London, Paris, Brazil, and points beyond. Jubilee’s close connection to DJ/producers worldwide means plenty of exclusive tracks and world premieres, as well as interviews and guest sets from the hottest up-and-coming DJs on the planet.

Sensing a void of intelligent dance music programming on American radio, and inspired by stations in other parts of the world including BBC Radio One, FBI Radio, Triple J and Rinse FM, Jubilee sees Fireworks as an outlet to showcase the wealth and depth of exciting music being created in NYC and beyond.

Her first ever show featured an exclusive from Mixpak, the Justin Martin remix of Lil Scrappy’s ‘Look At Me’ (the second track in). Listen here.

Mixpak Interview Series: Om Unit

March 28th, 2011

London producer Om Unit caught our attention with his banging Pop Lock remix of Joker’s ‘Digidesign’ early last year, and since then has released some stand-out solo records: ‘Lightgrids/Lavendar’ (All City), ‘Searching’, and his ‘Corridor’ EP on Plastician’s Terrorrhythm label. This month saw the release of his genre-defying ‘The Timps’ EP on Civil, which nods heavily to the sounds of Detroit and comes with an accompanying trippy video. We asked him about his DMC past, esoterics, Aux 88 and his plans for 2011.

You used to be a DMC champ, and work under the name 2tall. Clearly you’ve moved on from that now but how do you feel it’s affected your progression as a producer and/or a dj?

It’s fundamentally what formed me creatively, and will always be a part of my approach to music. I think working with the turntables so much gives you a good link to what you hear and what you feel physically.

Now you’ve changed to the sanskrit moniker Om Unit (which is tough to translate but is about the essence of the universe) – did you go out and find yourself or was it just a straight up reinvention?

Quite honestly, i’ve been into esoterics and spiritual traditons/paranormal stuff since i was a little kid so I think it feels more “me”. I think i got sick of people saying “oh yeah you are quite tall” all the time. Also people continuously spelled it 2Tall with a capital T like they didn’t give a shit or like they felt the need to correct it, but that’s just a personal gripe.

Mixpak FM: Deep Teknologi

March 27th, 2011

Deep Teknologi are a production duo and label hailing from London, headed by S.E.F and T. Williams, and have been responsible for some blinding house tracks that seem to perfectly blend the new with the old: from the appropriately named ‘Anthem’ to the soulful ‘Heartbeat’, with sounds that wind sweetly between house, dubstep and funky.

The multi-talented team (aside from the huge task of running a label, they also run clubnights and produce TV shows) made waves in 2010 with their mixes, records and signings and are set for the same this year. One half of DT, S.E.F, compiled this mix for us to show us exactly how they roll. It’s full of new and exclusive tracks, including some big forthcoming records from the label.

You can go subscribe to Mixpak FM via iTunes, subscribe with an RSS reader from the Mixpak FM site or download this mix directly.

DJ Ayres Heavy Warmup Mix

March 25th, 2011

There’s nothing worse than a horrible warm up DJ, someone that attempts to steal the limelight and plays the biggest tunes at 11pm. Most clubs and sadly, most DJ’s don’t understand that sometimes you are just meant to play your position. That’s not to say that it isn’t an artform and DJ Ayres has decided to celebrate that art in his new mix series, ‘Heavy Warmup’. You can check back each week for new ones (including the wicked DJ Eleven one) on his website.

Koyote “Midsummer Tales” Out Now!

March 22nd, 2011

“Midsummer Tales” is the name of Koyote’s ambitious first installment of a trilogy of EP’s he has set for release on Mixpak Records. Meticulously crafted on hardware synths and drum machines, Koyote pushes beyond his booty/ghetto-tech roots, tapping into a wide ranging set of influences, from Deep Purple to Kenny Larkin.

Packed with inventive analog rhythmic gymnastics, this EP looks back to the glory days of intelligent techno for inspiration but takes the sound further. The term “psychedelic body music” has been thrown around to describe a new breed of producers making tripped out analog music that you can actually dance to. “Midsummer Tales” extrapolates on this idea: it is a record that works both on the dancefloor and the motorway.

Composed during a road-trip around the south of France, this EP is the soundtrack to Koyote’s gallic adventure: overnight trains, August heatwaves, the whir of crickets and napping under bamboo trees. Join him.

Available now from iTunes, Beatport, TTL Digital and Juno.
