Stream ‘Half On A Baby’ Remixes

October 18th, 2011

The Fader had the first look yesterday with a stream of our ‘Half On A Baby’ Remixes EP, out October 25th on Mixpak, and now we’re presenting the full set of remixes, featuring Mosca, Funkystepz, Schlachthofbronx, Bert On Beats and Dubbel Dutch, alongside the Dre Skull produced original.

On its own, ‘Half On A Baby’ is a proper Caribbean dancehall/pop anthem, but when combined with remixes from some of the most exciting names in underground bass music it becomes something more. Dubbel Dutch takes “Half On A Baby” deep into the underground without losing sight of the melodicism that makes the original so enticing. Another member of the Mixpak fam, Schlachthofbronx, flips the track on it’s head, turning it into a tempo-shifting Power Soca heavy hitter.

Bert On Beats and Funkystepz hand in contemporary bass takes, with the former going hard and the latter taking a more melodic, tropical approach. Finally, Mosca (Number, Night Slugs, etc) comes with a subtle-yet-banging remix that simultaneously references early-90′s house and hyper-modern UK sounds.

Watch this space for the official release next Tuesday, 25th October.

Melé for Red Bull Studios

October 7th, 2011

Melé served up an exclusive mix for the Red Bull Studios:

This month Liverpudlian Krissy Peers a.k.a Melé takes to the ones and twos to put together a mix of heavy weight electro featuring tracks by Instra: Mental, house classics by Livin Joy, Robin S and some of his own dubplates.

Krissy’s production skills are as versatile as his DJ sets, with tunes like Starlight Express (Mixpak) that have all the hall marks of a pounding techno bad boy to the sizzurp snare of Lego (Mixpak). In June 2011 Melé jumped in the Red Bull Studios with Toddla T as part of Red Bull Mixtape collaborating on an 808 inspired joint. As well as working in the lab with Toddla, Krissy has also remixed for ice cream tattooed rapper Gucci Mane, Mumdance, Greenmoney and Contakt.

Koyote – Midsummer Tales Remixes EP Out Today

October 4th, 2011

Koyote’s Midsummer Tales Remixes EP is out today on Mixpak! After dropping the original Midsummer Tales EP this Spring, Koyote handpicked a selection of remixers resulting in a striking collection of psychedelic body music steeped in techno tradition but focused on forward-thinking tracks.

French house supergroup Marble Players flip “Night Train” into a Bleep n’ Bass monster while Altered Natives goes deep on “St Vincent Lespinasse”, splitting the difference between London and Detroit. The legendary Ceephax Acid Crew takes the same track in a different direction, working out some playful but emotional cyber electro. Koyote himself turns in a VIP mix of “St Vincent Lespinasse” that strips the original down and rebuilds it with a more overt orchestral feel full of suspense and driving energy.

Buy from Juno / iTunes / Beatport now.

Mishka Review Kingston Story

October 3rd, 2011

NY clothing dons Mishka review Vybz Kartel’s Kingston Story LP, released on Mixpak back in June.

Kingston Story contains all the writing abilities of Vybz Kartel and all the composing talent of Dre Skull to create excellent crossover material. I definitely have newfound respect for Vybz Kartel’s music after listening to this, and I’m really looking forward to more Dre Skull full length work like this one.

Melé’s 5 Tunes That Influenced Starlight

September 15th, 2011

Melé’s Starlight EP just dropped this week on Mixpak and has already made its way to the top of the Juno chart! As you may have noticed, it’s a departure from his usual productions and is heavily influenced by techno, rap and early house. We asked him to name five tunes that influenced the record:

Lloyd Banks – Start It Up

I basically listened to this record non stop for about a month when i heard it, still listen to it a lot now! The producer Cardiak has been a huge influence on my sound in the last few months, especially tracks like Lego!

Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Death Suite

Always been a massive fan of Erol and Boys Noize, I’ve really been going back to and playing a few of there things lately. I tried to capture a lot of the driving stuff they play in their sets in Starlight Express.

Bok Bok – Silo Pass

His Southside EP is by far one of my favourite things to come out this year, Silo Pass is everything I love about grime but somewhere in the future, dope!

Lunice – The Name Dunnit

Lunice is basically my favourite person in this thing right now, his music and his live sets a killing it! Another one that’s been influencing my new stuff heavily.

Joey Beltram – Game Form

The music speaks for itself!

Melé – Starlight EP Out Today

September 13th, 2011

Melé - Starlight EP

Melé’s anticipated Starlight EP is out today on Mixpak, head to iTunes, Juno or Turntable Lab now to get your copy!

The first track, “Starlight Express,” takes a page out of the bangin’ Jeff Mills playbook while “What’s The 411″ flips Dance Mania drums on their face. The other two cuts, “Lego” and “Raider”, manage to merge contemporary rap production signifiers with otherworldly electro, creating the perfect soundtrack to the next Sci-Fi blockbuster starring Waka Flocka Flame.
