“The Stopper” was a minor mainstream hit for dancehall pioneer Cutty Ranks. The video has a great, lo-fi, DayGlo fogginess that really fits the tune’s bubbly, ragga, riddim. “The Stopper” is from Ranks’ album by the same name, released on London-based Fashion Records in 1991.

Sub Skank went to visit Famous Eno in his home studio to talk about his influences, his records and his upcoming releases with Mixpak…if you listen closely you can even hear a sneak peak of his forthcoming track in the background. Coming soon!

Chandeliers is a hardware driven electronic band based out of Chicago. The group’s dark grooves and creeping synth lines have a Gary Numan feel but they come across sounding anything but retro. This session was recorded by Giant System, which is a project that was launched to document groups playing their own tunes in their own spaces. Chandeliers is part of a burgeoning, electronic scene in Chicago, along with LAZERCRYSTAL, Mahjongg, Mr. 666 and Gatekeeper, and part of a bigger trend towards more hardware based electronic music.

Mad A Road have put together this 15-minute post-Sting video featuring a lil interview with Mixpak artist Popcaan, alongside some great footage of the event and a chat with Merciless (who sadly didn’t quite live up to his name on the day). Lock on around 7 minutes in for the Poppy interview.

Over the Christmas break i settled down to Channel AKA (formerly Channel U), the legendary music TV channel that gave many of the UK’s current stars their first TV appearance. Now, like many underground things, it’s a little more commercial and more glitzy than before, however I did catch this gem by JME. ’96 Fuckries’ sees him spit, well, 96 bars of pure grimy bliss. Filmed with a steadicam over various locations in England. It’s out on Jan 15th.
