I ain’t gonna lie, there hasn’t been a great deal of amazing records coming out of JA in the last month (but hell, that’s just in comparison to normal, it’s still a pretty heavy turnout). Still, there are a few diamonds in the ruff, like the ever-reliable Equiknoxx with their White Label riddim, Truckback’s Question It riddim (with some wicked cuts from Beenie, Skinny Fabulous and a Vegas version that cries this year’s ‘I Am Blessed’), and the return of King Yellowman on the Locust Riddim, which has a nice twinge of 90s R’n’B production about it.

With the proliferation of mixes and listen-back features, I rarely listen to live radio unless I’m in a cab. And when I do it’s usually the same stuff that made me want to stop listening in the first place. On the rare occasion though, there’s that one tune that forces you to write down misheard lyrics in order to try and find it when you get home. Like this one from Undisputed & Ramzee.

This tune is somewhat of a throwback to the heady summer where Are You Gonna Bang? was blasting from every car from here to Ayia Napa. Ramzee effectively uses a simple phrase repeated ad nauseum to horrendously catchy effect. The remixes which you can hear in this link are more akin to the soundscape of today: dubstep, bassline and the return of UK garage.

When Mixpak interviewed dancehall fusion electro, r&b, soul, all things magnificent, raining only the best energy always duo Bonjay, the last words singer Alanna left us with was that Bonjay were about to pull the trigger.

And pull the trigger they have. On this side of the map releasing their latest EP Broughtupsy as well as power packing double videos for the lead track ‘Stumble’, this year, Bonjay have been East, West, North and South and most recently performed a handful of shows in Austin, TX at SXSW.

The latest from Bonjay has been delivered in video format  for their introspective song Creepin which features edited footage from Bill Mason’s 1972 Cry of the Wild documentary made for the National Film Board of Canada. The band are about to embark on a 3 month residency in Europe which will coincide with the European release of Broughtupsy on June 6th by One Bird Records. Check Bonjay’s European tour dates here.

We are still reeling from the whirlwind visit of Odd Future two weeks ago here in London. Tyler is the one making the headlines but Frank Ocean’s mixtape is one of the best releases this year. A highlight is the the track ‘Swim Good’ which has been given a bounce feel by Philly’s Emynd.
