Doc Daneeka rarely shows any compassion for others, is everything but helpful to the people he owes and ends up being effectively dead to everyone around him. Not the best state of affairs for Joseph Heller’s squadron physician. Mial Watkins, the producer who named himself after the troubled character, is luckily the anti-type of his namesake. However, there is one parallel between the two Daneekas. “I think I could be a bit of a hypochondriac producer, to be honest,” Mial says in reference to the neurotic traits of the other Doc Daneeka, and he leaves it at that.

The Swansea-based producer has a month off from gigging to write, and has naturally been busy with the label he runs with Ian Yeti, Ten Thousand Yen. Founded early last year, he enlightened the world with a five-part series of limited-edition 10″ singles featuring Julio Bashmore, C.R.S.T., xxxy and the like. “The label has been going great! It’s been a really long ambition for Ian, one of my best mates, and me. To get it off the ground and for it to do as well as it has is just great. We really love doing it. Last year has been good as well!” With regards to upcoming projects, the label has some exciting things up its sleeves too. Doc excitedly reveals that we can expect an E.P. by the Dutch producer Presk on the label soon. “He’s finishing the E.P. up at the moment, man’s got a wicked vibe.”

Leading the way in the new school of blunted-out lyrical beasts (although he strikes me as the kind of guy that skips class to smoke doobs behind the gym), Smoke DZA AKA George Kush is set to have a good year.

Fresh from profile-raising Smoker’s Club collabs with artists such as Big K.R.I.T., Mac Miller and the Hot Spitta Curren$y DZA is finally releasing his debut proper ‘THC’ (The Hustler’s Catalogue, I know what you’re thinking..) later this year.

This track (featuring man of the mo Kendrick Lamar) is from said project and I think you’ll agree that it is one of the mellowest beats pretty much ever, producer Hit Boy is on some Henry Mancini type ish.

Gugu – AC Riddim

One of the highlights of Rinse FM (106.8 FM if you are in your car) is the myriad of podcasts to choose from. So once a week I randomly choose someone’s podcast to listen to. Smasher‘s one had a mix of grime, funky and dubstep that you come to expect from any London DJ, until he played this track. It’s come out on the label of breakfast show host Scratcha DVA as part of the Afro Cuban EP. Like Jelly Roll, it’s funky, breakbeat and jazzy all at once.

What It Do, Shawty

Remember the song “Get It Shawty” by Lloyd? Or “Shawty Snappin'” by T-Pain and Young Joc? Plies and Tallahassee Hero gone and pulled a shawty too. The honour to bring back this word a mere five years later goes to Helsinki bound producer Teeth (one to watch) who undoubtedly destroyed the competition in the shawty game. The single is coming soon on 12″ vinyl and digital on 502 Recordings, including posted FaltyDL remix. Listen to the original track here, and give Teeth some love on Twitter here.
