Grime Vinyl

It looks like the resurgence of Grime vinyl is going to continue throughout 2011 with a strong release schedule lined up on No Hats No Hoods, Butterz, Hardrive and my label Oil Gang. There should be a few more labels starting up this year as well which will help get more Grime out there and in the record shops.

Objekt – Tinderbox 1 EP

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrGQDHPLJXs

Word goes around town that the Berliner producer TJ Hertz is the man behind “Tinderbox”, the track that came out a week ago onĀ Boomkat (Hardwax link here). Now releasing under his new moniker Objekt, he made a tremendous entrance with his Objekt 1 EP, a release that holds “Tinderbox” and “The Goose That Got Away” on the other side. Although both tunes are really good, “Tinderbox” completely bowled me over at first listen. Heavy but redeemed, a really clever build and most importantly, an incredibly nice listen. A “stripped down old school dubstep cut” as Hardwax describes it. One of my tracks of the year already, don’t sleep on this!

Lean and hungry dubstep minimalism from the hugely promising Objekt label. We know b*b-all about the artists but in true, facelessly underground style, the music does all the talking. For the forward steppers ‘The Goose That Got Away’ jams on a warped 808 rhythm and ascending chords vibe, sounding something like Pearson Sound sparring with Jam City. Next, ‘Tinderbox’ turns out a more menacing vibe, building a forcefield of 808 bass to protect crunked-out triplet rolls and a rush of darkside adrenaline synths tapping into a deep reserve of UK rave essence. – Boomkat.

Nigerian Goodies #2

Terry G comes across as a mix of Busta Ryhmes, ODB and Kemikal. His songs are for the most part catchy, throwaway tracks that always get stuck in your head. He effectively brought the term swagger into Nigerian slang then turned it on his head by coining the phrase ‘Ginger my Swaggah’.

My favourite Terry G story was when my brother attended a wedding in Lagos. Wedding receptions in Lagos tend to last 14 hours and over 3000 people attend (you pop in for 45 mins or so). Terry G was the special guest performing at the wedding and when he hit the stage all the waiters and waitresses started to do alanta (a dance move which Terry made popular), the guests remained seated. He is the Lil B of Nigeria.

P.S. Even a diss record aimed at him is one of the biggest songs in Nigeria at the moment.
