It’s no secret that Wiley is into his bashment (we’re still sitting on the edge of our seats waiting patiently for Showa Step to drop), but here comes the confirmation it’s here to stay. This brand new dancehall riddim sees Wiley taking his inspiration from Tenor Saw’s classic ‘No Work On A Sunday’. Fellow UK MC Maxwell D also jumps on the riddim, taking his cue from ‘Pirate’s Anthem’. Here’s to hoping there’s more of this in 2012.
‘Call Mi A Yardie’ is the UK’s biggest bashment hit for the summer, from Robbo Ranx’ protege Stylo G, fresh with an official video. Watch out for big things from Stylo.
“Kong Riddim” is some tuff, bashy UK Funky from Bristol’s Actraiser. It’s haunted vibes, deep basslines, and irresistible beat would make even Donkey Kong loosen his tie. The artist produces a bunch of different styles, from house and techno to dubstep and funky, and even has a funk side project. This track is unreleased at the moment, but he also just flipped “Cartridge Chaos VIP“, a housier 130 joint that he’s giving out for free. (Artwork by Andrio Abero.)
The Heatwave deliver yet another brilliantly hyperactive mix, appropriately titled ‘Energy Bashment’, bouncing from UK to JA, from the nineties to now, soca to funky via the latest and greatest dancehall riddims. It’s 60 minutes, 49 songs, a whole heap of exclusive refixes and one big Mixpak release. ENERGY.
Every year we get a slew of christmas bashment, and Vybz & Sheba have been quick off the mark this year, their song ‘Like Christmas’ has even got its own video already. The gist is when they touch each other, they feel like Christmas (what, drunk and full of Cadbury’s selection box?). 3 things to watch for in this Gaza Christmas vid: 1) Vybz dressed in an elf hat (and the whole of the Portmore empire in santa hats) 2) Vybz’s reflection in a bauble 3) The incredible snowy backdrop in the last minute of the song. Don’t forget to pay attention to the lyrics too, especially when Kartel says: ‘Me never inna nuttin wid ya aunty’, and Sheba: ‘Me believe you me dear, cos she ugly’. Happy Christmas aunty!!
I bet you’ve always wondered what would happen if those dudes who leave the Jehovah’s magazine, ‘The Watchtower’, in your mailbox got into making music videos with bashment artists? This is the brilliant vision behind Laden’s ‘Guide Me’. It’s basically a guide of how to do some not-so-subliminal messaging with WordArt. Lord have mercy.
Not many people know who Kari Jess is yet but, with tunes like this, a change is gonna come. Get ready for the African lick, bike revs, a big bassline and some serious slackness.
Beenie Man completely duppied the rest of the artists on the Seanizzle-produced One Day riddim, with not one but two summer anthems: ‘I’m Okay’ and ‘Drinking Rum & Red Bull’. The official video has just reached, featuring both songs – with ‘I’m Okay’ first up, cos presumably after a few Rum & Red Bull that statement no longer stood. Since the whole Visa saga in JA, Beenie’s been keen on reminding us he’s no gangsta, he’s never been to jail, and he changes his Clarks 3 times a day. It’s just a little update on his mental wellbeing really, just in case you were worrying…and badman serious, he nah tell no lie! Oh wait, isn’t it a little fib that you’re just OK Beenie? Two mad songs on one riddim is more than OK to us.
Watch out for the cameo from Vybz, holding up a miniature Clarks booty and Beenie waving round a bottle of Addi’s very own brand of rum: Street Vybz. Also, is this filmed in the same club as the Bounty/Ele video we featured a couple of weeks back? Someone get me in there.
In other news, according to The Jamaica Star, Future Fambo will be the voice of Major Lazer’s main character in their forthcoming Cartoon Network TV show, as part of the Adult Swim series. Get psyched for the weirdest show to hit your set.
