Lil Scrappy – Look At Me (Bok Bok Remix)

December 22nd, 2010

Brodinski’s latest curated project, “The Best of Everything, Volume 2″ is exactly that – a compilation that throws underground dance music allstars against the best r&b and hip hop of the last two decades. There are myriad highlights (Renaissance Man remixing Lil Wayne?! I almost died), but one of the standout tracks is the grimey Bok Bok redux of Lil Scrappy’s recent Mixpak single.

Bok Bok turns Lil Scrappy’s “grown ass man rapping” into a cough syrup injected drawl where you can almost hear Scrappy’s gold teeth clacking together nervously in between lines, ready to run off somewhere.

Be sure to grab the whole release, as Bok Bok, Brenmar, Dubbel Dutch, French Fries, J-Wow, Nguzunguzu, Renaissance Man Wildlife! and more throw down spectacular versions of your favorite hip hop guilty pleasures.

Grab it here:

The lovely Brooklyn-based producer William Salas,  better known under his moniker Brenmar, has knocked up quite some work these last couple of months. Next to writing songs for his band These Are Powers, he’s done a great mix called 24K this Summer, in which he perfectly blends in Dubbel Dutch with Kelis, amongst other fun edits and remixes. Not many people can stitch together R&B, Hip Hop, House and Bass this naturally. The mix also includes a fun track named ‘Knee Deep’ that he made with LA talents and Mixpak acquaintances Nguzunguzu. Next to all of this, Brenmar has been busy working on his first EP out through Discobelle in late October and will be a right treat; the release includes four original gems and a remix package taken care of by Ikonika, DJ Rashad and Optimum. Not bad at all, all I can do is suggest you don’t sleep on this release!

Brenmar has produced a track called ‘Back Beating’ that we’re allowed to give away to you for free, as an hors d’oeuvre for his EP release. In Brenmar’s own words, this track is a quirky one for the dance floor, and he’s right: we couldn’t stop our feet from moving even if we tried!

Mixpak Interview Series: LOL Boys

April 27th, 2010

I am still wondering whether LOL Boys are real, or intricately constructed androids with a penchant for head throbbing, game changing percussive dance music. A  quick google search will give you an idea of how expansive their remix work has been over the past year, with an arsenal mainstream R&B re-edits to spine crumpling drum patterns overtop indefinable dance anthems of the future.

But who exactly are these two strange musicians? Real people, or a manifestation of the internet becoming aware of its own existence and using that consciousness to start making dance music?

These two mystical overseers of the web took a moment to shoot the breeze about influences, forthcoming work, (never) forgetting about Dr. Dre, and also provided us with a fantastic mix of exclusive club music – much of which I can absolutely guarantee that you have never heard in your life.

Interview by Brendan Arnott (my text in bold)

For those on the internet who don’t know – who are LOL Boys and how did they start making music together?

We met through a music message board.  We were both into each other’s music and thought “Why not try something together for this remix competition?” We liked how it came out, so we continued to work together. So, basically, the whole concept behind LOL Boys was like, to exist on the internet… to make music over the internet sending parts back and forth, try something different.  It’s an ongoing collaboration. We’ve made beats where we’re in the same room but normally we’re about two thousand miles apart.
