Lil Silva – The Patience EP

May 9th, 2011

Though UK Funky producer Lil Silva has been doing big things for years now, he’s still only put out a couple of releases, on none other than the Night Slugs imprint. Now he’s releasing this EP, The Patience on Good Years, which drops today. The four-track EP is pretty dark, and features the sub-bass filled ‘Cheese & Bun’, the synthy ‘Patience’, the piano-riff club banger ‘Wait Is Over’ and the track below, ‘On Your Own’, featuring vocals from Sampha. It’s emotional. Go get the EP on vinyl or digital here.

Funkstepz On The Remix

April 28th, 2011

Rinse FM and Hyperdub’s Funkystepz have been cracking out yet more funky bashment remixes to tear down the dance. After the killer remix of Rihanna’s Rude Boy last year, now comes a new run of Vybz Kartel refixes and an excellent rework of one of last year’s biggest riddims: Jim Screechie. Their ‘Tek Buddy’ refix (someone could make a compilation of these by now) has a similar intro to the Pepper Riddim, but then drops into a straight up military funky beat. Get ready to do the the funky air piano! Be sure to watch out for them on the Boiler Room’s Hyperdub takeover next week.

T. Williams – Heartbeat (Mosca Remix)

November 3rd, 2010

The original is fantastic but I have become obsessed with the Mosca remix of T. Williams’ ‘Heartbeat’. I love the dichotomy between hard beats and soft vocals, I could talk about bassline refixes of US R&B singers for days. In this case, it’s Roc-A-Fella’s Terri Walker, whose voice hugs the deep rolling bass of Mosca’s remix. The tune is what i would imagine if Nina Simone teamed up with today’s broken beat producers. The record is out now.
