Over the Christmas break i settled down to Channel AKA (formerly Channel U), the legendary music TV channel that gave many of the UK’s current stars their first TV appearance. Now, like many underground things, it’s a little more commercial and more glitzy than before, however I did catch this gem by JME. ’96 Fuckries’ sees him spit, well, 96 bars of pure grimy bliss. Filmed with a steadicam over various locations in England. It’s out on Jan 15th.
“I had a Durag straight at birth,
God sent me here to make shit worse,
Nobody wants a punch in the face
Coz when you get punched in the face it hurts”
It’s no secret that Wiley is into his bashment (we’re still sitting on the edge of our seats waiting patiently for Showa Step to drop), but here comes the confirmation it’s here to stay. This brand new dancehall riddim sees Wiley taking his inspiration from Tenor Saw’s classic ‘No Work On A Sunday’. Fellow UK MC Maxwell D also jumps on the riddim, taking his cue from ‘Pirate’s Anthem’. Here’s to hoping there’s more of this in 2012.
Boy Better Know are back with their second installment of their ‘Tropical’ compilation, over 5 years after the first acclaimed instrumental grime mixtape. Number 2 sees JME, Royal-T, DJ Q, Todd Edwards and newcomer Preditah on production, all mixed together by Logan Sama. This one from DJ Q, ‘Tropical Oh’ is one of the biggest of the collection, go listen and grab the whole lot here.
Andy goes H.A.M. on his remix of Lethal Bizzle’s powerhouse grime track “Pow 2011.” The remix maintains the heaviness of Bizzle’s original cut but with the slick synth burbles and layered percussive complexity that’s coming to define Petr’s sound. Andy’s released an EP and two new tracks in under a month, and with that is starting to gain a reputation as not only one of the youngest producers out right now, but also one of the most prolific. It’s hard to keep up; kid is ridiculous! This track is available for free download at Andy Petr’s Soundcloud.
This banger brand new from Bad Taste records, featuring Walter Ego, Coco & K.Dot straight out of Sheffield. Check them hanging out on a variety of different vehicles, including an ice cream van and an american school bus. Shut your mouth before you get SMH! Watch out for Walter Ego’s EP dropping soon.
Seems everyone is releasing statements or giving away their music for free in retaliation to the label bigwigs right now. A Bag of Myths EP is grime producer and DJ, Spooky’s offering, which features smashers such as ‘Bashment Woooo’, and remixes of ‘Sweet Shop’, ‘Cheque 1-2′ and more:

With the proliferation of mixes and listen-back features, I rarely listen to live radio unless I’m in a cab. And when I do it’s usually the same stuff that made me want to stop listening in the first place. On the rare occasion though, there’s that one tune that forces you to write down misheard lyrics in order to try and find it when you get home. Like this one from Undisputed & Ramzee.
This tune is somewhat of a throwback to the heady summer where Are You Gonna Bang? was blasting from every car from here to Ayia Napa. Ramzee effectively uses a simple phrase repeated ad nauseum to horrendously catchy effect. The remixes which you can hear in this link are more akin to the soundscape of today: dubstep, bassline and the return of UK garage.
