Mixtape Roundup: Jermaine Dupri, J. Cole, Plies, Planet Rock, Mama Said Knock You Out (20th Anniversary)

September 8th, 2010

It’s been long time, I shouldn’t have left you, without some dope mixtapes to listen to . . .

Hitmaker Jermaine Dupri has a new mixtape out called I Think I’m Berry Gordy, which is named after the legendary Motown Records founder. On the mixtape, Jermaine spits a freestyle over Rick Ross’ infamous track “B.M.F,” as well as Kanye West’s “Power” and Chris Brown’s “Deuces.”

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation signee J. Cole flips the cover art and title of Nas’ classic LP Illmatic for his new freestyle song called “Villematic.” The North Carolina rapper goes in over Kanye West’s just-released “Devil in a New Dress” tune. According to reports, J.Cole was so inspired by Yeezy’s track that he now plans to record a full mixtape.

Miami rapper Plies teamed up with DJ Scream for his latest mixtape titled You Need People Like Me. This mixtape isn’t for everybody. There are a lot of crappy foolish rap songs on here. But a few standout joints include the somber “Boosie” and the socially-conscious track “Why U Hate.”

Sedgwick & Cedar Present Planet Rock – Paris is one of the best mixtapes of 2010. For those who don’t know, Sedgwick & Cedar is the New York address of the birthplace of hip-hop and its founder DJ Kool Herc. (Recently, the building, in which Kool Herc would spin back-to-school parties there, was saved by developers after years of financial turmoil.)

For this mixtape, S&C tapped famed DJ Just Dizle from Paris to seamlessly mix old-school rap classics. The 28-song compilation features gems from LL Cool J, Davy DMX, Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC, Fantasy Three, Disco Four, Jazzy Jay and more (Track List). This is a tremendous hip-hop mixtape. Unfortunately, you can’t download it. But you can stream it below:

Fashawn is a rapper from Fresno, California, who has been putting in major work in 2010. His new mixtape Grizzly City 3 (hosted by DJ Skee) represents the quality music he’s been dropping within the past year or so. The 18-song compilation boasts guest appearances from Ron Artest, Dirty Money, Lil Wayne and Grafik. Standout tracks include the reflective “Remember the Times,” the jazzy “Desperado” and the cautionary track “California Streets.”

Mixtape Roundup: Gibbs, Wale, Game, STS, Jigga, Drake

August 5th, 2010

Freddie Gibbs recently dropped his new project, Str8 Killa EP, and the young rapper has been heralded as the future of gangsta rap by several tastemakers. All hyperboles aside, after listening to the EP, I have to agree that Gibbs is going to make a lot of noise in 2010. The collection features 21 tracks of dope music (pardon the pun), including a cocaine-themed reworking of an old Whispers song called ‘Slanging Rocks’. Hosted by producer Statik Selektah, the project boasts guest appearances from Jay Rock, Bun B, Pill and more. To download the EP, click HERE or cop it via iTunes.

Check out Gibbs’ “National Anthem” video:

Compton rapper Game drops another mixtape before his anticipated LP R.E.D. (due Aug. 24). Game wanted to give folks a little taste of the album before it hit the streets: “Brake Lights is like an appetizer to the R.E.D. Album,” Game spits. “I know a lot of people been waiting on R.E.D., so I wanted to put out something to hold them over while I finish up my album.”

Washington, D.C. transplant (by way of Africa) Wale is back with another Seinfeld-themed mixtape More About Nothing, the sequel to 2008′s About Nothing. Some of the guests on the project include Wiz Khalifa, Avery Storm and Daniel Merriweather.

You might remember the nasal-voiced rapper STS (aka Sugar Tongue Slim) on “Hustla” or “Right On” (featuring Joanna Newsom) from The Roots’ classic LP How I Got Over. The Philly-native, Atlanta-bred MC just dropped a free mixtape called The Sole Music EP, which showcases his nimble rhyme skills.

Co-signed by Black Thought, STS is tapped as the next rapper you should look out for. If you don’t believe me, peep this track: Is You With Me?

We Reminisce: Melvin Bliss (R.I.P.), “Substitution” Beat

July 27th, 2010

Melvin Bliss, a relatively unknown 1970s crooner, died Monday (July 26), according to various hip-hop blogs.

The Chicago native is widely recognized for his 1973 B-side throwaway “Synthetic Substitution,” which became the most-sampled song in hip-hop history. The list of rappers who “borrowed” the breakbeat to create classic rap hits is long and varied. Along with Bliss’ soulful vocals, “The World’s Most Recorded Drummer” Bernard “Pretty” Purdie played the iconic drum patterns on the song, which was produced by Herb Rooney.

At the time of his death, a documentary on Melvin Bliss’ life was in production by filmmaker Earl Holder.

Every “golden-era” rapper and producer owes a debt to this man and maybe even some back royalties (quiet as it’s kept).

Check out a selection of artists who utilized the classic breakbeat in their songs:

Houston rapper Paul Wall (aka “The People’s Champ”) is a changed man. Through the years, Wall’s unhealthy diet of pill poppin’, fast-food eatin’ and beer drinkin’ turned him into the “People’s Heavyweight Champ.” Last year, the rapper weighed in at a hefty 320 pounds and was struggling with weight-related issues, including diabetes. He went on a diet but that proved to be unsuccessful. “I tried doing it the legit way. I stopped sippin’ syrup, stopped taking pills . . . but it ain’t work,” Wall tells BallerStatus.com. “So I went out . . . and got [the gastric bypass] surgery. I lost 100 pounds, so I’m back at my fight weight. I’m ready. The champ is back.”

Paul Wall is indeed back. His new mixtape Sole Music features him spitting rhymes over head-nodding, guitar-tinged southern rap jams. Guests include Yelawolf, Pitbull and fellow Lone Star rappers Slim Thug and Dorrough. Now this is some good ‘ol sole food.

Big Boi’s new solo LP Sir Lucious Left Foot . . . the Son of Chico Dusty is in stores now. But before you go out and cop the stankiest album of the summer, check out his new mixtape Big Boi’s Mixtape for Dummies: A Guide To Global Greatness. It’s a great music retrospective of Big Boi’s career both as a soloist and as one-half of OutKast. Tracks feature on the mixtape include, “B.O.B,” “Shutterbugg,” “Elevators,” “Kryptonite,” “Playa’s Ball” and others.

By the way, Big Boi’s Sir Lucious LP is one of the best rap albums of 2010. It’s a crunk-filled ride of beat-pounding southern rap that knocks harder than anything in music right now. If you need an OutKast fix, pick this up — it’s a great album.

The Beat Goes On: Big Boi, The Roots, Slum Village, Mixtapes, Jigga, Redman

June 10th, 2010

It’s been a longtime since we’ve heard anything new from OutKast. Well, you can all rejoice because Big Boi’s is set to drop his debut LP Sir Lucious Left Foot, the Son of Chico Dusty on July 6. Judging by the music previously released, Chico Dusty may go down as a classic rap album. The video for his single “Shutterbugg” is visually stunning. The amazing clip features Big Boi, whose loses head, Keri Hilson and a adult-sized muppets as Boi’s backing band. Not your average rap video, that’s for sure. In addition, Big Boi dropped a hot joint last week called “General Patton” that is a certified street banger. Get ready, y’all, Big Boi is bringing the heat this summer.

Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots also are bringing some heat later this month with their 11th disc, How I Got Over (due June 22). If you know anything about the Roots, you know that these guys are simply the best hip-hop band in the world. Their new single “Doin’ It Again” has the band sampling John Legend’s vocals from his 2006 ballad “Again.” The song is short and sweet with Black Thought rhyming about the band’s determination to keep bringing quality music to the masses . . . again and again and again. The Roots’ How I Got Over is the must-have album of the summer.

And the hits keep on coming . . .

Detroit rap duo Slum Village are one of the most venerable groups in hip-hop. In July 2009, SV lost one of their founding members Titus “Baatin” Glover. After a year of mourning, SV’s remaining members T3 and Elzhi will finally drop their long-awaited album Villa Manifesto on July 29. If you fell asleep on their 4-song EP last year, DO NOT miss out on their full-length album. The late and great producer J Dilla is featured on five tracks and Little Brother makes a cameo on it, as well. SV’s first single, “Faster” (Featuring Colin Munroe) is smooth track with the trio reciting romantic come-ons to the lovely ladies of summer. The song is perfect for cruising in your car while you head to beach.

I know this is a music column, but I have to throw in my 2 cents regarding the new A-Team movie, which hits theaters this Friday (June 11). First, I’m a HUGE fan of the popular ’80s television series, so I was excited about seeing the show on the big screen. But now after watching the trailer and a few preview clips from the A-Team flick, I’m kinda disappointed.

First, Ice Cube should have played B.A. Baracus. As for the rest of the cast, I can’t picture them being “the A-Team.” I pictured George Clooney as Hannibal, Jim Carrey as Murdock, and, well, Bradley Cooper as Face. I hope the film succeeds at the box office, but I’m a little worried. I don’t want this movie to tarnish what I love about the TV show. Hollywood loves to remake nostalgic television shows into movies — for better (The X-Files) and for worse (The Honeymooners).

Mr. T recently spoke out about the A-Team movie, claiming that the movie is too violent and not kid-friendly. “People die in the film and there’s plenty of sex but when we did it, no one got hurt and it was all played for fun and family entertainment,” Mr. T told the Guardian.

The one thing I do like about The A-Team movie is its theme song, which was remixed to perfection by producer Just Blaze. He shot a video explaining how he flipped the theme song for the movie. The end result is an exciting club-friendly joint that Mr. T would surely approve:

New York rhyme-slinger Iron Solomon is not household name, but he’s infamous for lyrically beating down competitors at freestyle-battle contests. His impressive rhyming skills have won him respect among many of his rap peers including the great DMC of Run-DMC fame. Solomon was able to get DMC to rap on the hook of his new single, “Sucker MC’s.” Although DMC has lost his great baritone voice, it’s good to hear him raising hell on a track. Check it out:

Iron Solomon – Sucker MC’s (Featuring DMC)

LMNO & Kev Brown recently dropped their second collaborative album called Selective Hearing Part II, in which the music was inspired by the late and great James Brown. The video for the duo’s latest single, “Ya Know,” features old performance clips of the Godfather of Soul with LMNO and Kev Brown showing the musical connection between J.B. and hip-hop.

Kano Teams Up With Wiley, Aidonia And Boys Noize

May 25th, 2010

London-based rapper Kano is releasing his fourth album Method To The Maadness at the 30th of August this year. His previous albums have included phenomenal guest appearances by the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Damon Albarn and Vybz Kartel, and his forthcoming album will continue this lovely tradition. Premiered on BBC1 last Friday, Get Wild is the first treat off his new album. Quite an overwhelming choice of teammates: the track features the top dog of grime Wiley, the dance hall czar Aidonia and is produced by techno kingfish Boys Noize (who recently produced Kelis’ 22nd Century and is currently working on a remix for N.E.R.D.). This clash of four great minds turned into quite something – the lyrics are fire, the production is lotsa fun and the outcome is blazing! Click here to purchase the track.

New Gucci Mane Collaborations

May 24th, 2010

Gucci Mane is set to release the second part of his trilogy The State Vs. Radric Davis, ”The Appeal”, at the end of the Summer and is planning a worldwide tour to promote his upcoming album. A fresh start with a new record label, a new management and some new collaborations. Last week two of these collaborations hit the internet: a track by Sean Garret feat. Tyga and Gucci called “She Geeked”, which is officially the first track he did after his release from county jail. He sounds different, but it’s a dope track nevertheless and Tyga’s participation in this track is quite remarkable too. This track will appear on Sean Garret’s upcoming mixtape Inkwell. The second track on which Gucci appeared is a French Montana track produced by J. Cardim called “Straight Cash”. Big Gucci Mane La Flare, I’m glad to have you back! BURRR!
