Sissy Nobby “Lay Me Down” Out Now!

April 20th, 2010

Mixpak is proud to release Sissy Nobby’s new single “Lay Me Down.”

This anthemic, midtempo rap song is equally indebted to the sounds of No Limit Records and Rap A Lot Records, carrying on a Southern tradition of syrupy synth strings and a head nodding bass perfect for cruising in your Cadillac. Featuring the inimitable voice of New Orleans bounce star Sissy Nobby, “Lay Me Down” is a sex track like you’ve never heard before.

To say Nobby is the next Southern rap phenomenon is no exaggeration. With no label backing or promo, he’s gotten over ten million plays on Myspace, leading major label A&Rs to come calling. He performs on a nightly basis, 365 days a year, running the club scene in the city of New Orleans with additional dates taking him around the South. On any given Friday or Saturday night, Nobby can be seen playing up to three shows a night (each show at a different club), and it’s that kind of dedication to the live show that gives him a strength of voice beyond the reach of many rappers. Still in his early twenties, Nobby’s unforgettable voice and raw production style has become a local institution, cemented by mixtapes, Limewire downloads, and the crowds of crazy girls that follow him around like he’s the Pied Piper of booty.

Mixpak Interview Series: Renaissance Man

December 23rd, 2009

Renaissance Man

They’re everything most men wish they could be: dapper, sophisticated, modern, and really, REALLY good at making a new genre of house music that has the world enthralled, ecstatic and confused, all at the same time. They’re also secretly a new breed of super-human warriors who can survive being submerged in lava and can go weeks without sleep. Okay, so the last part wasn’t true, but geeez, Renaissance Man have one of the most impressive work ethics I’ve heard of in years.

They describe themselves as “a platform for contemporary dance music” and 2009 saw a rush of new users embrace the platform. With an onslaught of remixes for Turbo, Kitsune, several classy bootcuts, and EPs on Dubsided and Sound Pellegrino, Renaissance Man arrived in style.

Scandinavian upstarts Martti (Jaxxon) and Ville (Downtown) took some time while they were in the studio to talk about the resurgance of open minded dance music. [Note: this interview took place several months back, apologies for our delay in posting.]

Brendan: What are some of your first memories and experiences of house music?

Jaxxon: The city where I used to live in Finland when I was younger called Turku had a very vibrant house scene in the 90′s. The whole late 90′s deep house thing hit me hard.

Downtown: Yeah, same here. I started feeling it in the late 90s.

Jaxxon: Actually we are now working in the studio one of the O.G Finnish house guys, Sasse, aka Freestyle Man in Berlin.

Renaissance Man Mix For Sixpack France

September 2nd, 2009

Finnish duo Ville and Martti are probably better known to you as Renaissance Man and they’ve made it their mission to bring House music back in a gigantic, fresh way for 2009. In the last six months, they have racked up some stellar releases on Dubsided, Kitsune and Sound Pellegrino, helping revitalize a genre that was hurting for new sounds.

We’ve tapped Renaissance Man to remix Sissy Nobby’s upcoming Mixpak release “Lay Me Down” which should be out by late October. You’ll be hearing much more about Nobby in coming months, but there’s an awesome introduction to the New Orleans Sissy Bounce genre in this XLR8R article. If you want to hear a overview of the genre, I’d advise Dre Skull’s excellent Sissy Bounce Mix for XLR8R.

More details about the Nobby release coming soon, but listen to this jackin’ house mix Renaissance Man did for Sixpack France which they filled with exclusive Renaissance Man bootcuts and re-edits, including a sneak peak of their forthcoming Sissy Nobby remix . Sixpack is also offering an exclusive Renaissance Man inspired t-shirt which you can grab here! Update: I have one, and it is awesome.
